Baton Stories

Journeys, reflections, and public participation in motion.

This page shares selected baton journeys from people taking part in Counted In Your Name.

Each story helps show how the initiative works in practice: the baton is carried, the framework is shared, and the message moves from community to community.

You do not need to copy any journey exactly. Each participant may choose how much they wish to record, write, or share.

The purpose is simple: to make participation visible.

Featured Journeys

Published journeys may include:

  • short videos
  • photos or still images
  • written reflections
  • route summaries
  • council acknowledgement updates, where appropriate

All material is reviewed before publication.

Submissions are not published automatically.

What a Journey May Include

A baton journey can be simple.

It may include:

  • the baton at the starting point
  • a few clips from the walk
  • local landmarks or public places
  • arrival near the local council building
  • confirmation that the framework was sent by email
  • a short reflection on why participation matters

The process matters more than production quality.

You do not need professional equipment. You do not need to appear on camera.

Simple Recording Guide

If you choose to record your journey, a short video of around 60–90 seconds is enough.

  • Start — show the baton and starting point
  • Move — show short clips from the walk
  • Place — show a landmark or public location
  • Council — show arrival near the council building
  • Send — show the framework being sent by email, without private details
  • Reflect — share one sentence about why participation matters

We inherited a voice. We should not hand the next generation a weaker one.

Safety and Awareness

Your safety comes first.

If you choose to record your journey, please stay aware of your surroundings and avoid putting yourself or others at risk.

Please take care when:

  • walking near roads or crossings
  • filming in busy public areas
  • using your phone or recording equipment
  • travelling alone
  • recording at night or in isolated places
  • approaching public buildings
  • including other people in footage

Choose a suitable time and route. Participation should be calm, lawful, respectful, and safe.

Respect and Consent

Please avoid filming identifiable members of the public unless they have agreed to be included.

If someone does not want to be recorded, respect that.

Please do not record private conversations, personal information, vehicle plates, addresses, or documents containing private details.

If you show an email acknowledgement or submission screen, remove or cover personal information before sharing it.

The initiative is public-facing, but participation remains voluntary.

Sharing Your Own Journey

If you would like to take part, please register your interest through the Get Involved page.

After contact is made, guidance will be provided on:

  • receiving or arranging the baton
  • carrying out the journey
  • sending the framework
  • recording optional footage
  • submitting videos, photos, or written reflections for review

Submissions are reviewed before publication to ensure they are suitable, respectful, and consistent with the purpose of the initiative.

Video Hosting

Videos may be hosted using a third-party platform such as Vimeo.

This helps keep the website stable and avoids hosting large video files directly.

If a video is selected for publication, it may be embedded on this page or linked from the journey gallery.

Editing Your Video

You do not need professional editing software. Simple trimming is enough.

Free tools people may wish to explore include:

These tools are optional. You may also use a phone editing app if that is easier.

The content matters more than the production quality.

The Message

The system continues because continuity matters.

But when the public withdraws, the public voice weakens.

We inherited a voice. We should not hand the next generation a weaker one.

Clarity is key.

Participation follows understanding.

Internal Publishing Setup

This page is designed so that stories are not published automatically. Add approved journeys in the JavaScript section at the bottom of this file.

Set a journey to status: "published" when it is ready to appear. Keep it as status: "draft" while it is still under review.

Vimeo is the correct spelling. To embed a Vimeo video, use only the Vimeo video ID in the journey entry.
